The great south

 

oasis of Skoura

 

First day :   Morning departure to the Toudra Gorge, passing the Oasis of Skoura, where numerous ancient kasbahs, some sadly in ruins, stand amongst the palm trees. From here, the route takes us through Kela’a M’gouna, the Valley of Roses, with a stop to see cosmetic articles locally-made from the valley’s abundant roses. These products are well-known throughout Morocco and are highly valued. An off-road route leads to the Dades Gorge for lunch and then a short walk alongside the river before continuing to the Toudra Gorge for the first night.

Second day :   After breakfast, we go off-road to N'Qob, passing the Tizi-n-Tazzazert mountain in the Saghro mountain range to the village of N’Qob for lunch. From here our route takes us to the Dra’a Valley at Tansikht in the afternoon, continuing south to Zagora for dinner and a night’s rest.

 

Third day :   The next morning, there is an opportunity for a camel ride of about one and a half hours in the dunes beyond M’hamid (Erg Lihoudi). Lunch is in M’hamid itself, reached in the 4x4 across the dunes. The same afternoon we make our way across another 60km through the varying features of the desert; ‘erg’, ‘reg’, ‘hammada’, oases, to the Erg Cheggaga dunes which, at 300m high and 45km long, are the largest in Morocco. These dunes afford a wonderful view of the setting sun, before returning to the bivouac at the foot for dinner and a night’s rest.

Fourth day :   After breakfast, the road crosses another 90km of desert, passing Lake Iriqui and the mountains as well as fossils, for enthusiasts. The first village beyond the desert, Foum Zguid, is the place for lunch and a refreshing shower. The return to Ouarzazate takes us through Taznakht, famous for its carpet shops, and back to the Dra’a Valley at Agdez for dinner and the night in the oldest local kasbah, “Kasbah Tamnougalte”.

 

Fifth day :    Departure to Ouarzazate across the mountain pass of Tizi-n-Tinfifite (1660m) and, after the Kasbah of Tifoultoute, the famous Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, which has been used as the background for some memorable scenes in many film masterpieces such as "Lawrence of Arabia", "The Gladiator". We visit the Kasbah and have lunch before driving back to Ouarzazate at the end of the day.

First day :   We depart in the morning by 4x4 from Ouarzazate to Agdez, where the Dra’a Valley starts, and we stop for a short tea break here, then off-road along the Dra’a Valley’s ancient caravan route to Zagora for lunch. In the afternoon we drive to M’hamid, the gate to the desert, to enjoy the sunset in the dunes close to the village. Here we have dinner and spend the night in nomad tents.

Second, third and fourth days :    We trek by dromedary for three days and three nights to discover the most beautiful desert of Morocco and its vast dunes with varying features of the desert; ‘erg’, ‘reg’, ‘hammada’, oases. We arrive in the afternoon of the fourth day at the famous Cheggaga Dunes, where you can climb Erg Laabidlia to watch the sunset from the top. We have dinner and spend the night in nomad tents among the dunes.

 

Camel Trek

NB - Walking time is approximately five hours a day (two and a half hours in the morning, and the same again in the afternoon), although it is also possible to ride the camels. Other camels are there to carry the equipment. Meals and tents are prepared by our guides and camel drivers.

Fifth day :  After having breakfast, we drive back by the 4WD through another off-road crossing 60 Km in the Sahara, we arrive to the village of M’hamid for having a shower, then we reach Zagora by the paved road, we lunch in a nice Riad. We reach Ouarzazate at the end of the day.

After breakfast, an off-road route crosses another 60km of the Sahara. We then return to M’hamid for a shower. From here, we continue to Zagora for lunch by a pool. At the end of the day, we reach Ouarzazate again.
